Montage Laguna Beach

Built on a rugged bluff at the edge of the artist colony of Laguna Beach, this resort and beachfront spa embrace nature’s organic edges while providing a refined and contrasting language of traditional architectural lines. The design team was challenged to provide a public park along the bluff top that would be conjoined with the private development improvements. Burton navigated the complex process, which included over 50 public meetings, by creating an overall circulation plan that moves visitors to and from the park and hotel with minimal impact on the environment. The design incorporates a series of hidden gardens and branching walkways that are adorned with local artwork. The juxtaposition of art with nature and the unifying framework of the resort’s grounds satisfied both the City of Laguna Beach and Montage, resulting in a world class destination evocative of the brand’s trademark relaxed luxury.
